60 mins of fame: Emma Burns meets artist Antony Gormley on her descentIn one performance, a naked man named Gunter jumped to freedom - leaving behind a live chicken.
But now it's all over - the 100 days and nights of artist Antony Gormley's Fourth Plinth art project in London ended just after 9am on Wednesday.
During the One And Other project, a different person stood on the plinth every hour for 24 hours a day.
The 2,400 individuals who took part could do whatever they wanted as long as it was legal.
Balloons at dawn
On the final morning, as dawn broke over Trafalgar Square, the penultimate plinth dweller stood attached to hundreds of pink balloons and juggled balls - in support of a breast cancer charity.
"But is it art?" - is a question Gormley hears a lot during the final hour of his marathon project.
He motions to the Fourth Plinth behind him: "This is a piece of 19th century art furniture we are experimenting with, and whether it's art is irrelevant.
"We are asking very important questions about who can be represented in this extraordinary square of patriotic value - it's become a place of protest, it's become a place of celebration."
First and last
Rachel Wardell was first on the plinth in July.As the last "plinthian" Emma Burns, from Darlington, is lifted into position at 8am, the crowd begins to swell, and a smattering of applause briefly replaces the din of rush-hour traffic.
One of the people watching is the very first person to take position on the Fourth Plinth on 6 July.
Rachel Wardell, from Sleaford in Lincolnshire, says it now seems "like a lifetime ago". She used her 60 minutes to raise awareness of the NSPCC.
"My life has pretty much gone back to normal, I've been dipping in and watching as much as I can," she says.
"Most people applied because they were passionate about the idea of the project - it was only once they'd got a place that they decided what they were going to do."
Andrina Boyle was inspired to take part by Liverpool's City of Culture statusShe adds that there's already talk of a reunion on the first anniversary - 6 July 2010.
Andrina Boyle, who took part in week 8, still vividly recalls her 60 minutes of fame on the plinth.
"My slot was 8am. When I first went up there it was fine, the adrenalin was going, and then halfway through I got vertigo and I thought what am I doing here, it's a bit high!"
She adds: "It allowed people all over the country to have not just 15 minutes of fame, but a whole hour. Is it art? I don't care!"
Human nature
Emma Burns used her time to remember the football fans who died at Hillsborough in 1989The art critic Peter Whittle tells the BBC: "I think the last thing it could really be called is art. This crowd is not that typical. Most people have actually been quite indifferent.
"I travel this way every day and the crowds have been quite small on the whole, and quite rightly - what is there really for them to see?"
After Emma Burns has descended, I ask Gormley what view of British life did we get from the Fourth Plinth project?
"It was view of us as a people with a fine appreciation of eccentricity," he says. "Also a people with hearts and minds that care about a wide range of things - both personal loves and losses, but also big issues that are facing the globe."
And what does he say to critics who say this was just a high-brow version of Big Brother?
"I think it has used the form of the spectacle to do something much more existential. This is an enquiry into human nature now," he says.
"The amazing thing is people have endured the rain and the darkness and the burning sun - and we've done it."
80,000 people gather at the home of rock Donington Park to see Limp Bizkit, Faith No More, The Prodigy, Slipknot and Anvil.
Backstage at Download festival
The best thing about metal and heavy rock is that it never really goes out of fashion. Primarily because it was never hugely in fashion.
Since starting in 2003, Download is now established as the UK's premier rock-fest inviting 80,000 tattooed, pierced, sun-burnt, happy - there is an incredibly friendly atmosphere - people to worship riffs, feedback and lank hair.
Fitting those criteria perfectly, Californian rap metal crew Hollywood Undead open the main stage on Friday.
The seven-piece weave together the shtick of Slipknot - they wear 'scary' masks - and the melody of Linkin Park in impressive fashion.
First day
Following that, Merthyr Tydfil's cheeky emo-pop sons The Blackout pay homage to the other bands on the bill that day - Korn, Limp Bizkit and Faith No More - by playing a medley of spiky covers.
You Me At Six's Download tour
"They're all on after us so we've probably quite annoyed those three headlining bands," jokes singer Shaun afterwards.
Next up, Toronto's cartoon-rockers Billy Talent are like a coiled spring - older material like Try Honesty sounding particularly crisp.
Killswitch Engage are by far the most technical band of the day - devastating riffs, exquisitely pulled off.
Elsewhere on site, Enter Shikari play a sweltering mid afternoon secret set at the Tuborg Tent.
Not a limp return
A lot has changed in eight years, since Limp Bizkit played proper live shows with their original line up.
Not though the length of Fred Durst's shorts, his omnipresent red cap or his band's brand of pre-millennial angst.
Nor, Donington's apparent love for nu-metal.
With guitarist Wes Borland dressed up like some kind of devil cockatoo the band rattle through Break Stuff, My Generation and Nookie.
Two Fred Durst-a-likes get hauled out of the crowd and on to the stage like a pair of particularly violent backing dancers.
Catching them as they jump back into the crowd, Ryan from Leicester says: "You wonder what it'd be like to do it up there...unbelievable."
We also clock at least one broken nose emerging from the spectacular moshing.
Reformed headliners Faith No More are determined to make this a moment, decorating the stage with a flowing pair of burgundy velvet curtains.
In a matching a red suit and cane Mike Patton, sporting a devious pencil 'tache - is basically Heath Ledger's Joker fronting a particularly dirty soul-metal dinner party.
Prodigy plan Dizzee collaboration
They start with a tongue in cheek cover of Peaches And Herbs Reunited before visiting Epic, Evidence, Easy and a cheeky cover of Lady Gaga's Poker Face.
And whilst their reception is by no means berserk, it is an exercise in suave rocking.
Second coming
On to Saturday and journeymen Anvil christen their first appearance at Donington Park for 27 years by revealing their new album will be called Juggernaut Of Justice.
Later that night they'll headline the Tuborg Tent with characteristic glee.
Mid-afternoon, and main stage security have built themselves into a reinforced semi-circle as if preparing for war as Australian drum 'n' bass metalers Pendulum arrive - it's officially their 150th show.
The band of last year's event might not have the subtlety of the Prodigy or Chase And Status but they do have one trick (Rob Swire's synth) which works superbly well.
With The Prodigy watching side of stage (Pixie Geldof, James Nesbitt and Brian May are also here) a re-worked cover of Voodoo People and Slayer's Reign In Blood ignites some field-spanning jumping.
After banning people taking pictures of his personal chemical toilet backstage Marilyn Manson is either on form, or not, depending on how together you like your rock stars.
He's joined on stage after each song to have his make up retouched and generally throws an entertaining paddy as he re-starts songs like Sweet Dreams after they come apart at the seems.
Download festival's main stageSpectacular headliners
There's a reason that returning big-hitters The Prodigy have sold tons of albums this year - it's because they throw parties like this.
Their appearance headlining the second stage is less of a gig more of a tectonic shift, with the ground separating between your feet.
Maxim dedicates Warrior's Dance to Slipknot, while Keith Flint travels 20 metres out into the crowd to ride a security man's shoulders. Spectacular stuff.
"I've dreamed about this moment since I was 12 years old," says Slipknot's Corey Taylor.
He's not kidding, as the nine masked metal musketeers put everything they have into their headline appearance back on the main stage.
Flame throwers, pneumatic drum kits and mass screaming, it has it all. A thundering dream, realised.
Final push
A wine red Harley Davidson parked backstage can only mean one thing. ZZ Top are on site. Sunday is more of a return to the days of Monsters Of Rock.
The crowd, thoroughly baked by the dry sun, squeeze their final bit of energy to greet vintage performances from Journey, Whitesnake and headliners Def Leppard.
With one final rush of amplified feedback Download is done for another year. It's probably been their best yet.
Kill Bill and Kung Fu star David Carradine has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel room.
Thai police told the BBC the 72-year-old was found by a hotel maid sitting in a wardrobe with a rope around his neck and body on Thursday morning.
The US star was in Thailand filming his latest film Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder.
Mr Binder said the news was "shocking", adding: "He was full of life, always wanting to work... a great person."
Carradine was part of an acting dynasty which included his father, John Carradine, and brothers Bruce, Keith and Robert.
The star was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, which spawned sequels in the '80s and '90s.
After a career which included more than 100 movies with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, he recently found fame again thanks to his role in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film Kill Bill.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Bierman, and four children.

And it?s a sad picture, the final blow hits you
Somebody else gets what you wanted again and
You know it?s all the same, another time and place
Repeating history and you?re getting sick of it
But I believe in whatever you do
And I?ll do anything to see it through
Because these things will change
Do you feel it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down
This revolution, the time will come
For us to finally win
We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah
So we?ve been outnumbered
Raided and now cornered
It?s hard to fight when the fight ain?t fair
We?re getting stronger now
Find things they never found
They might be bigger
But we?re faster and never scared
You can walk away, say we don?t need this
But there?s something in your eyes
Says we can beat this
Because these things will change
Do you feel it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down
This revolution, the time will come
For us to finally win
We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah
Tonight we stand, get off our knees
Fight for what we?ve worked for all these years
And the battle was long, it?s the fight of our lives
But we?ll stand up champions tonight
It was the night things changed
Do you see it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back fell down
It?s a revolution, throw your hands up
Cause we never gave in
And we sang hallelujah, we sang hallelujah
Hallelujah

Closed off from love
I didn?t need the pain
Once or twice was enough
And it was all in vain
Time starts to pass
Before you know it you?re frozen
But something happened
For the very first time with you
My heart melted to the ground
Found something true
And everyone?s looking round
Thinking I?m going crazy
But I don?t care what they say
I?m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don?t know the truth
My heart?s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open
Trying hard not to hear
But they talk so loud
Their piercing sounds fill my ears
Try to fill me with doubt
Yet I know that the goal
Is to keep me from falling
But nothing?s greater
Than the rush that comes with your embrace
And in this world of loneliness
I see your face
Yet everyone around me
Thinks that I?m going crazy, maybe, maybe
But I don?t care what they say
I?m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don?t know the truth
My heart?s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open
And it?s draining all of me
Oh they find it hard to believe
I?ll be wearing these scars
For everyone to see
I don?t care what they say
I?m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don?t know the truth
My heart?s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

Ooooh.. (Akon) Konvict
There's a first time for everything
It's definitely one of them nights
I knew when I looked in his eyes
That he was gonna be trouble for me
I never wanted to lie, I knew that my baby would cry
If he knew what we were doing
But if his love don't pass the test
I gotta get it from somewhere else
But I'm gone and I need my man
Hope he understands, forgive me baby
I've gotta take a chance tonight
So I'm doing me, myself,
and I can't wait no more
Sitting all alone
Man, I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
I can't wait no more
Man, I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me
Been a long time since I
Did something good for myself (self)
But why should I be put through hell
Well he's doing what he wanna do
I've finally found somebody else (else)
Who with me makes me wanna feel
Things that I've been missing so long
And his love always passed the test
But it's a shame I had to look somewhere else
Well I'm gone and I need a man
Forgive me baby
I've gotta take a chance tonight
So I'm doing me, myself,
And I can't wait no more
Sitting all alone
Man I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
I can't wait no more
Man, I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me
Forgive me, but I need to be loved, too
Forgive me, but I can't wait around for you
Forgive me, if I found a man who understands
Just what I need
Forgive me, but I need to be loved, too
Forgive me, but I can't wait around for you
Forgive me, if I found a man who understands
Forgive me, baby
I've gotta take a chance tonight
So I'm doing me, myself,
And I can't wait no more
Sitting all alone
Man I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)
I can't wait no more
Man, I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me
I've gotta take a chance tonight
So I'm doing me, myself,
And I can't wait no more
Sitting all alone
Man I really hope
Hope you'll forgive me (oh oh)

To the centre of the city
Where all roads meet
Waiting For You
To the depths of the ocean
Where all hopes sank
Searching For You
I was moving through the silence
Without motion, Waiting for you
In a room without a window
In the corner I found truth
In the shadowplay acting out your own death
knowing no more
As the assassins all grouped in four lines
Dancing on the floor
And with cold steel
Odour on their bodies made a move to connect
I could only stare in disbelief
As the crowds all left
I did everything
Everything I wanted to
I let them use you for their own ends
To the centre of the city in the night
Waiting For You
To the centre of the city in the night
Waiting For You...
